Assistant Professor in Indigenous Studies

The Institute for Ethnic Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in Indigenous Studies beginning August 2023. The successful candidate will be appointed within the Indigenous Studies Program of the Institute for Ethnic Studies (.49 FTE), an academic, interdisciplinary unit which has focused for fifty years on issues of racial and Indigenous justice. The successful candidate will also be appointed in a partnering department (.51 FTE) selected on the basis of specialization, training, and mutual interest. Possible partners include the Departments of English, History, Modern Languages and Literatures, Political Science, Psychology, and Communication Studies.
 

The successful candidate will offer introductory interdisciplinary courses in Indigenous studies along with survey and specialized upper-level and graduate courses in Indigenous studies within the candidate’s field of scholarly expertise. The successful candidate will also join a highly diverse faculty that has received ACLS, NIH, NSF, and other major research grants as well as multiple awards for scholarly and teaching excellence. Depending upon interests and expertise, the successful candidate may have the opportunity to become a Fellow at UNL’s Center for Digital Research in the Humanities or to become a Fellow at UNL’s Center for Great Plains Studies.

A Ph.D. or other terminal degree is required and must be in hand by August 14, 2023. Candidates must demonstrate a record of scholarship and training in Indigenous Studies and a teaching record supporting the ability to offer introductory interdisciplinary courses in Indigenous studies, survey courses, and upper-level and graduate courses in the candidate’s field.

 

Particularly welcome are candidates with lived experience navigating tribal social structures and with research and teaching expertise in environmental justice, Indigenous sovereignty issues and treaty rights, digital humanities, Native languages and/or literatures, women’s and gender studies, Great Plains tribal cultures, and/or LGBTQ+ studies.
