Associate Vice Provost, The Writing Center

Associate Vice Provost, The Writing Center

The inaugural Associate Vice Provost, The Writing Center will lead a new office whose singular focus is to enhance writing support at UC Davis. This director will have the opportunity to build The Writing Center in collaboration with faculty and staff from across the campus, all of whom are aligned in their mission to meet the needs of our diverse students and to do so at a moment when the university is developing its identity as an Hispanic Serving Institution with very high research activity. In this respect, The Writing Center's leader will not only be building a new center from the ground up, but also advancing a key goal from Chancellor Gary May's university strategic plan, which calls for “bold steps to close gaps in academic outcomes for students from underrepresented, first generation, and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.”

The Writing Center is situated on the top floor of a newly constructed state-of-the-art teaching complex at the heart of campus. As a new unit within the university's Office of Undergraduate Education, The Writing Center will be integral to campus planning and programming efforts to improve success and achieve equitable outcomes for all students, both graduate and undergraduate. The Writing Center will equally contribute to the Office of Undergraduate Education's support of graduate students and faculty in their mission of providing an outstanding undergraduate education. With new facilities to work from and a central administrative appointment, the inaugural director of The Writing Center will be well-positioned to work with students, faculty, and staff in all colleges and disciplines to develop their own writing as well as their writing instruction.

The Associate Vice Provost, The Writing Center at the University of California, Davis reports directly to the Vice Provost and Dean for the Office of Undergraduate Education. The position will carry with it an academic appointment in a relevant department. The position is open to tenured or tenure-track faculty qualified for the rank of associate or full professor in the University of California. The position will come with reduced teaching in a home academic department during the period of appointment. The position will include the opportunity to continue and advance scholarly research in a chosen field. The Associate Vice Provost, The Writing Center will find committed collaborators in the vibrant community of writing scholars at UC Davis.

The Associate Vice Provost, The Writing Center's primary responsibility will be to provide strategic vision and operational guidance for the newly launched center. This will include developing and leading a staff of writing support professionals to create and deliver student-facing services including peer tutoring, faculty-focused workshops and resources for instructors in the departments and programs that deliver the university's writing curriculum, as well as activities that extend and intensify efforts in Writing Across the Curriculum and Writing in the Disciplines. The new center's facilities include event space, creating a venue for cultivating campus writing culture with The Writing Center as its nucleus. Because The Writing Center is new, moreover, the inaugural leader will have the chance to work with students, faculty, and staff to establish the full scope of its role, building upon a solid foundation of instructional excellence and staff partnership, as well as a recent history of campus-wide planning to improve writing support at every level.

The Associate Vice Provost, The Writing Center will partner with faculty and staff from across campus to ensure optimal alignment between student support coming from The Writing Center and writing instruction and research coming from the University Writing Program, the Departments of English, Comparative Literature, Native American Studies, and additional departments that devote considerable resources and attention to such teaching and research. Further, this Associate Vice Provost will convene a university writing council charged with helping to ensure equitable outcomes for students both in the center's support operations and in classes that teach writing, wherever those may occur across our colleges and professional schools. In this way, The Writing Center and its leader will constitute a key point of contact for consultation and collaboration around writing, bringing together key constituencies and interested parties from diverse areas of campus.
