Assistant Professor of Medieval Literature

The Department of English at Clemson University seeks an outstanding scholar and teacher of Medieval Literature for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, beginning Fall 2023. Successful candidates will hold a Ph.D. in Medieval Literature and/or Medieval Studies.  A focus on issues of race, empire, and diaspora is preferred.  Medieval Literature, spanning as it does many centuries, constitutes core aspects of the English curriculum: e.g., the teaching of Anglo-Saxon and Middle English literatures, as well as courses on the history of the English language.  Duties will include maintaining an active research and writing profile, developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, serving on various departmental and university-level committees, and contributing to the intellectual life of the English Department.

The normal teaching load for tenured and tenure-track faculty is two courses per semester.

Clemson is an R-1 land-grant institution located in upstate South Carolina—a global university with a mission to serve the diverse communities of our state. In 2016 Clemson inaugurated Clemson Forward, a strategic plan to strengthen its research profile, diversity, and workplace quality of life. The English Department has taken a leading role in pursuing these goals by confronting legacies of violence and nurturing traditions of political and intellectual organizing on our campus.  The Department is currently conducting several tenure-track searches, including one on English and Global Black Studies. The search committee is especially interested to hear from candidates who bring to their research and teaching the diverse perspectives that come from non-traditional educational backgrounds or an understanding of the experience of those under-represented in higher education.

Application Procedures: for full consideration please submit a cover letter outlining your interest in and qualifications for the position and a copy of your updated curriculum vitae to Interfolio by November 1, 2022.
