The Humanities Department at San José State University seeks an Associate Professor for a full-time, tenure-line position in Digital Humanities, broadly construed, with primary teaching in the interdisciplinary Humanities Department and with responsibility for developing Digital Humanities research, curriculum, and community collaborations. We highly encourage applicants working in Digital Humanities in any of the following areas to apply: environmental humanities, visual culture, arts as social practice, indigenous studies, comparative religious studies, ethnic studies, or American studies.

The Humanities Department is a prominent center for creative, interdisciplinary study and research on campus. It is proudly committed to recruiting, hiring, and nurturing a diverse faculty that mirrors its student body. The Department offers three B.A. Programs: a Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation B.A.; a Creative Arts B.A.; and a Humanities B.A., in which students pursue a concentration in American Studies, Liberal Arts, or Comparative Religious Studies. The Department is also home to two team-taught General Education Programs: the lower- division American Cultures GE sequence and the Humanities Honors Program, which has both lower and upper- division Humanities Honors GE courses. The Department first offered its Introduction to Digital Humanities course (HUM95) in fall of 2021. The course is required in two of the Department’s three B.A. Programs; as of Fall 2022, it is repeatable for credit. The Humanities Department is also in the process of building out two small Digital Humanities suites for student and faculty use.

The teaching load is 9 units a semester, as long as the faculty member remains eligible for our "RSCA Reassigned Time Program." In addition, there is modest competitive internal funding opportunities for research travel, scholarly projects, and public programming. The Office of Sponsored Research offers guidance in submitting grant proposals to a wide variety of granting agencies.

This Associate level position is an excellent opportunity for scholars interested in advancing their career at a teaching-centered institution that is a national leader in graduating historically underserved students and in helping to further establish Digital Humanities in the Humanities Department and across campus. SJSU values teacher-scholars and student participation and collaboration in Digital Humanities projects. Indeed, it is an exciting time for Digital Humanities in Silicon Valley; the campus community has created a version of Digital Humanities that represents the teaching-intensive goals of SJSU’s faculty, staff, and student population (see SJSU’s version of “What is Digital Humanities”). With a recent NEH Challenge Grant, the College of Humanities & the Arts and Martin Luther King, Jr. Library are building a physical Digital Humanities Center to offer workshops, collaborative opportunities, community space to complement the existing VR/XR lab, 3D printing lab, prototyping lab, and more. Though the DH Center is scheduled to open in 2025, SJSU has already demonstrated its robust engagement with Digital Humanities in faculty and student projects (see ongoing DH projects). The College also has an established record of supporting publicly and community-engaged humanities and arts programming through its H&A in Action initiative, works closely with the Digital Scholarship librarian and unit (see Digital Humanities LibGuide), and has begun work on establishing The Ethical Public Technologies Institute. Recent modifications to University Policy on retention, tenure, and promotion now includes diversity, equity, and inclusion work and the scholarship of engagement, including public humanities, digital projects, collaborative scholarship, and so on.
