Lecturer in Portuguese and Brazilian Culture

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Florida invites applications for a full-time instructor at the rank of Lecturer in Portuguese language and Brazilian culture, beginning August 16, 2023. This is a 9-month, renewable, non-tenure-track position. 

Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Teaching three courses per semester in the Portuguese language program, with an emphasis on classes in Portuguese for Specific Purposes (translation, tourism, business), the supervision of internships, and the summer study abroad program in Rio de Janeiro
  • Participating in departmental service and activities, including committee work, ongoing training in pedagogy and/or proficiency training, undergraduate advising, and curriculum development for cultural studies for the major/minor
  • Working closely with the Portuguese faculty to promote Portuguese language, Brazilian Studies, and the study abroad program through campus venues and social media, with a focus on student recruitment

Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in Portuguese or a closely related field (M.A. or M.Ed. will be considered if other qualifications are outstanding), native or native-like fluency in Portuguese and English, demonstrated excellence as a Portuguese instructor, and a strong commitment to working with diverse populations.

Additional desirable qualities include a working knowledge of Spanish, interest in proficiency testing such as Celpe-Bras and familiarity with the FLAS (Foreign Language Area Studies) Fellowship program sponsored by Centers for Latin American Studies.
