Assistant Professor in Gender, Race, and Health: Program in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

Position Summary: The Program in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) and the Department of English at Washington State University invite applications for a permanent, full-time, nine month, tenure-track position in Pullman, WA, specializing in Gender, Race, and Health, with health broadly defined to include wellness and social health. We seek a critical humanities scholar and educator who is dedicated to feminist and queer studies and whose research and teaching focus is in, but not limited to, one of the following interdisciplinary areas: Transgender Studies; Sexual Health and Reproductive Justice; Medical Narrative/Health Studies; Postcolonial/Decolonial Science, Technology, and Society Studies; Feminist/Queer Disability Studies; or Environmental Health/Anthropocene Studies. We also welcome applicants whose scholarship values engagement with communities, such as Indigenous community health and wellness initiatives, to cite one among several possibilities. This position builds on the commitments of WSU’s separate multi-year cluster hire program in Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment August 16, 2023.

Job Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to pursue an active interdisciplinary research agenda leading to publication. With primary duties in WGSS and a tenure home in English, they will be expected, as part of a regular load of two courses per semester, to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in WGSS, including but not limited to those related to gender, race, and health; gender and science; LGBTQ+ studies; and cultural studies (qualitative) methods. They will be able to develop courses in their areas of specialization at both the undergraduate and graduate level, and they will be expected to mentor students at all levels. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice and engage in service at the program, department, college, university, and professional levels.

Required Qualifications:

• Earned PhD in WGSS, Cultural Studies, Disability Studies, Ethnic Studies, or related interdisciplinary field, or PhD in English with formal interdisciplinary graduate training in the above or related field, prior to the appointment start date.

• Demonstrated record of or potential for published research on gender, race, and health in the critical humanities.

• Proven or potential for successful teaching and course development in WGSS.

• Ability to mentor students at all levels.

• Demonstrated commitment to campus diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Housed in the Department of English, WGSS has a long history of advancing feminist and queer studies knowledge at WSU. Its Affiliate Faculty are nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise across a spectrum of disciplines and fields, including Asian American Studies, Chicanx and LGBTQ+ history, Cultural Studies in Education, and Feminist and Queer Studies. WGSS offers a bachelor’s degree, two minors, and the successful candidate will help shape an interdisciplinary graduate certificate now in development. The Department of English offers a bachelor’s degree, an MA and PhD in English, and certificates in Editing and Publishing (undergraduate), Digital Humanities and Culture, and Teaching English as a Second Language (both at the graduate level).
