QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Delaware seeks an exceptional candidate for the position of Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Japanese language, literature or culture, with a strong commitment to teaching, program administration and interdisciplinary research. Applications are especially encouraged from candidates whose research focuses on Japanese literature and/or culture (including one or more of the following areas: film, visual arts, cultural studies, gender studies, identity studies, disability studies, Indigenous studies, or digital humanities). We seek creative individuals who are eager to work in a collaborative environment, have demonstrated research excellence, and are high-quality teachers and mentors dedicated to incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Japanese (in hand by September 1, 2023), native or near-native fluency in both English and Japanese, a proven record of excellence in teaching and an existing or emerging record of strong scholarship. The ideal candidate will be called to provide leadership and vision for building the Japanese program at the University of Delaware, including a projected MA program in Japanese. Academic responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate courses in Japanese language, literature and culture at all levels, leading independent study courses and developing innovative, interdisciplinary, topical courses. Dynamic teaching skills will be essential. Service to the department is expected, including advising Japanese majors and minors. An interest in developing and directing study abroad programs for Japanese is also highly desirable. The anticipated teaching load is five courses per year.

LANGUAGES, LITERATURES AND CULTURES AT UD: The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Delaware (https://www.dllc.udel.edu/) is within the College Arts and Sciences. DLLC strives for an inclusive and equitable culture, with faculty from all over the world. The Japanese program offers a B.A. degree and B.A. Honors degree in Japanese Studies, an undergraduate Japanese Minor and a Japanese certificate. It contributes to the department's unique Three Languages major as well as the Asian Studies program. Our student-run Japan-related clubs bring together a highly motivated, accomplished and growing group of students of Japanese language, literature and culture on campus. Our faculty teach courses in Japanese on topics ranging from language, literature and translation, to calligraphy and visual media such as anime, manga and videogames. Faculty in Languages, Literatures and Cultures also have the opportunity to develop and teach courses on their areas of expertise in English.

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Delaware offers exceptional educational experiences including integrated instruction, research and public engagement.
