Assistant Professor in French and Francophone Film and Media

The Department of European Languages and Studies (ELS) seeks an assistant professor of French and Francophone Film and Media, with a secondary specialty in a field of European Studies (literature, culture, history). The faculty member will be expected to teach and conduct research in French and Francophone film/media theory and history, and to teach a variety of other upper-division courses contributing to the French and European Studies majors/minors. The position will also involve contributing to the MA Program in European Studies and crosslisting courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs in Film and Media Studies (FMS).

All the aforementioned programs have an interdisciplinary orientation. The faculty of ELS/FMS therefore hope to attract candidates interested in historical, theoretical, cultural, and/or philosophical questions while maintaining a focus on the field of French and Francophone film and media studies.

All applicants must have native or near-native fluency in French and have a Ph.D. in French, in Film Studies, or in a related field. [Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. Ph.D. must be completed by the date of appointment (7/1/2023).]

Candidates should submit a letter of application describing their research; a statement of teaching experience and interests; a statement addressing past and potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion; an article-length writing sample not to exceed 30 pages; a current CV; a list of three references with contact information; and Authorization to Release Information Form.

To ensure full consideration, applications should be submitted by November 8, 2022. Additional materials, such as letters of recommendation and sample syllabi, may be requested at a later date.

Please direct questions about the electronic submission procedure to Suzanne Bolding, smboldin@uci.edu.
