Assistant Professor of English (Tenure-track)

POSITION:
St. Mary’s University is excited to be hiring an Assistant Professor with a broad background in literature to support its 3 and 4-year English degrees. As a small, undergraduate program, we need an effective, versatile teacher able to teach senior-level survey and topic courses in early modern and/or long 18th C literature, as well as our first-year core sequence (Middle Ages to the present). We are open to diverse research specializations including, but not limited to, relevant period expertises; other welcome (sub)specialties might include, for example, Indigenous or other BIPOC literatures; drama or other genre studies; post-colonial studies; creative writing. The successful candidate will be hired into the research-teaching-service stream (3/3 teaching load) or the teaching-service stream (4/4 teaching load).


START DATE: July 1st, 2023

St. Mary’s offers both research-teaching-service stream (3/3 teaching load) and teaching-service stream (4/4 teaching load) appointments, which may be negotiated by the successful candidate.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Instruct and assess students in assigned courses, in accordance with course descriptions
• Update and improve courses
• Maintain excellent communication with students and colleagues
• Supervise students in their senior projects (English 401)
• Participate, contribute, and show initiative in program development
• Engage in university committee work and governance
• Advance research (research-teaching-service stream only)


QUALIFICATIONS:
• PhD in Literature (must have by date of appointment)
• Previous teaching experience
• Record of research and publication or strong potential (research-teaching-service stream only)
 

COMPENSATION:
