Spanish Translation - Assistant Professor

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures seeks applicants for a tenure-track, academic year position as an Assistant Professor of Spanish—Specialist in Translation and Interpreting. The successful candidate will be expected to teach lower/upper-division courses and to potentially create and teach graduate courses in Translation and Interpreting. All courses will be taught in Spanish. Courses may also include Practical Spanish for Professions, Spanish in Bilingual Schools, Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language, Advanced Conversation, Advanced Composition, and Advanced Grammar. The candidate will also be expected to develop and enhance appropriate curricular offerings, lead the development of a certificate program in Translation and Interpreting for the legal and medical fields, supervise and assist student research, and maintain a productive research agenda, including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and other professional activities. Other faculty responsibilities include: serving on department, college, and university committees, engaging in community service and outreach, advising students, and interacting with faculty and students in related fields. Outcomes assessment and service learning are important components of the university curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to work cooperatively with faculty and staff in the program, department, college, and university. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

Qualifications:
Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):
- An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Spanish with an emphasis in Translation and/or Interpreting or other closely related disciplines from an accredited (or equivalent) institution.
- Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered; however, for an appointment, the doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2023.
Required Experience:
- Native or near-native ability in Spanish and English.
- Experience teaching at the undergraduate level.
- Ability to successfully teach Spanish to English and English to Spanish Translation and Interpreting courses as well as specific courses, such as Spanish for medical or legal professionals.
- Evidence of research and/or experience in the field, such as conference presentations, dissertation topic, and/or publications.
- Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience teaching Spanish for heritage speakers.
- Familiarity with current instructional approaches, assessments, and/or American Translators Association (ATA) standards of competence and ethics.

About the College and Department:
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures houses two undergraduate majors: Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Spanish and French. Special Majors in Classical Studies, Humanities, and German are available in conjunction with a detailed plan between the student and advisor for that language. The Department offers several minors in Classics, French, French and Francophone Studies, German, Humanities, Italian Studies, Portuguese, Portuguese Studies, and Spanish. The Master of Arts degree program in Spanish offers to its many students the opportunity to study with faculty who are active researchers with ambitious publishing and academic agendas. We reach a wider population of University students through our General Education course offerings. The goal of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures is to encourage multiculturalism and multilingualism in the Central Valley.
