Language Lecturer, Chinese

NYU Shanghai invites applications to fill full-time Language Lecturer positions to teach Chinese to a diverse group of students from around the world. We are seeking Chinese language lecturers who can: 

  • Teach with a load of 4 Chinese language courses (4-credit per course, 2 courses for Fall semester and Spring semester respectively) per academic year (excluding summer/winter sessions). 

  • Teach language courses for short-term intersessions during summer/winter (with additional pay). 

  • Teach additional language study sessions, including preparation classes for HSK, online language study, evening faculty/staff Chinese language classes, etc. (with additional pay). 

  • Create course syllabi, supplementary materials, and examination papers and manage other course-related work for the courses accordingly. 

  • Offer 2 office hours weekly per semester (Fall and Spring semesters) for consultation and students’ additional study. 

  • Organize a minimum of two events per semester in support of the Chinese language program and assist in organizing and coordinating Chinese language and culture activities, language contests, and field trips for students, academic conferences, workshops, training, lectures, seminars, and faculty recruitment, as assigned. 

  • Assist with the placement and exemption exams, including conducting online or face-to-face interviews, proctoring exams, and grading exam papers. 

We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience teaching creative writing and who can help us develop a course in the field. 

Qualifications

Qualified candidates should:

  • Have Master’s degree minimum, specialization in the Chinese language, Chinese literature, Linguistics and other relevant academic concentrations is preferred;

  • Be familiar with the US and Chinese educational systems;

  • Be fluent in English and Chinese, oral and written;

  • Have minimum 2 years of experience teaching students from English speaking countries, the experience of teaching advanced and/or post advanced level Chinese language courses (e.g. classical Chinese, literature reading, business Chinese, Chinese film, etc.) is preferred;

  • Be willing to teach in the target language at all levels of instruction (experience with target-language teaching is preferred);  

  • possess problem-solving, time management, excellent written and verbal communication skills;

  • Be a responsible, self-motivated, flexible, team player, able to work well under pressure, and have the creative ability to use one’s own initiative.

This is a Full-Time Continuing Contract Faculty (FTCC) position.  Candidates must have completed the required degree by the time of appointment. Typical appointments are on 3 year terms, with expected teaching loads of 4 courses per academic year.  Successful candidates will be hired on the basis of teaching and service.
