Director of Chinese Language

NYU Shanghai invites applications for the position of Director of Chinese Language. This primarily administrative position has responsibility for overseeing the continuous development of the Chinese language program, with particular attention to curricular development, course assessment, instructional design, pedagogical training, and recruitment of relevant faculty. The Director may also be asked to teach up to two courses per academic year under the auspices of the Global China Studies academic area.

We seek candidates who have completed a Ph.D. or Ed.D in Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Chinese Language and Literature, or other closely related disciplines. We prefer candidates with at least six years of Chinese language teaching experience to English-speaking students at the college level. We are especially looking for someone who has prior experience in program development, professional training, and can bring consistent scaffolding to especially third-year Chinese and beyond as well as coherence to each of the levels.

The Chinese language program at NYU Shanghai currently has twenty-two full-time instructors, who offer eighty language courses to approximately six hundred students annually. Uniquely situated in the heart of Shanghai, it is embedded in an immersive language learning environment with community engagement, field trips, and summer study-away programs. One half of the undergraduate student body of 2000 students is Chinese and one half comes from the rest of the world; all students who are not native speakers of Chinese are required to take at least two years of Chinese language study. Many seek to continue beyond that minimum requirement.
