POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies at UC Santa Barbara invites applications from scholars engaged in Taiwan Studies at the Associate Professor and Professor ranks for the Lai Ho and Wu Cho-liu Endowed Chair in Taiwan Cultural Studies. The successful candidate will also administer the Center for Taiwan Studies, housed in the Department. We especially welcome interdisciplinary scholarship on Taiwan literature that locates Taiwanese culture and society in a larger transcultural, transhistorical, comparative, or global context. Alongside literary studies, other specializations may strengthen the application, such as: cultural studies; gender and sexuality studies; race, ethnic, and indigenous studies; colonial and postcolonial histories; film and media studies; environmental humanities; cultural approaches to political economy; and Sinophone studies. Engagement with theories derived from East Asian and Sinophone Studies, as well as Critical Race, Queer, Feminist, and Postcolonial theories are also attractive. The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong publication record, effective teaching, leadership qualities, and an ability to administer the Center for Taiwan Studies. The duties include organizing academic lectures, film screenings, cultural events, international conferences, and student fellowship competitions. The ideal candidate would be able to connect Taiwan Studies at UC Santa Barbara with other academic institutions around the globe, and also facilitate outreach to the greater Santa Barbara community.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, professional activities, and service.

This hire is supported by The Lai Ho and Wu Cho-liu Endowment Fund for Taiwan Studies.
