The Department of Classics and Modern Languages at Xavier University invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Spanish. The position carries a 3/3 load for those who maintain an active research agenda.

We especially encourage scholars whose expertise complements and builds on our existing strengths, prominently including colleagues with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Caribbean Studies; race and indigeneity; spiritual practices in the Americas; environmental humanities; hemispheric approaches to the Americas; and linguistics, translation, and interpretation.   

Candidates should demonstrate strong interdisciplinary interests and the ability to participate effectively in interdisciplinary programs within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Enthusiasm for teaching language and culture at all levels of the curriculum and passion for teaching in a liberal arts environment are essential. The successful candidate will combine the basic qualifications of a generalist with their research specialization. Ph.D. in Spanish, Latin American Studies, Comparative Literature, Spanish Linguistics, or a closely related field; ABD candidates will be considered, but all requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed before start of employment. All candidates must have native or near-native proficiency in both Spanish and English, and should demonstrate promise for outstanding teaching, mentoring, and research in the areas of language and culture.

Xavier’s Department of Classics and Modern Languages seeks a colleague interested in helping us embed community-engaged and socially relevant pedagogy throughout our Spanish curriculum.

Xavier University is one of only 361 colleges and universities to receive the 2015 Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Our new faculty member will be designated as a Community-Engaged Early-Career Faculty. As part of a cohort of incoming community-engaged faculty, our new colleague will have access to programs that provide resources of time, money, and mentoring for development of community-engaged and socially relevant curriculum. 

Xavier’s urban location in Cincinnati allows faculty to work with community partners to develop engaged learning and internship opportunities. Xavier is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as well as the Big East.
