Franklin College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor of English and Creative Writing to begin August 2023. Located about 20 miles from downtown Indianapolis, Franklin College is a private, four-year small liberal arts college that provides a strong, active, and tailored liberal arts education through small class sizes and intentional relationships between students and faculty mentors. This position is part of a college-wide cluster of searches designed to increase curricular coverage of areas related to diversity and inclusion, as well as to promote inclusive teaching strategies across the university. The ideal candidate is a generalist who can teach American literature, composition, and can mentor undergraduate research housed within the curriculum. We are specifically interested in applications from candidates whose intellectual and pedagogical expertise or experience engages power, privilege, and social justice. Teaching responsibilities are 12 credit hours each semester (generally 3 courses), and one intensive January term course on a three-year rotation. Broad service to the College such as advising and committee work is required. Candidates with an interest in teaching research methods and mentoring in-curriculum undergraduate research are particularly welcome.
The following are required:
- Ph.D., or ABD status in English or related field;
- Ability to teach 200-, 300-, and 400-level American literature (any period) and composition;
- Ability to teach African American, Native North American, or other minority literatures;
- Ability to contribute meaningfully to the College’s commitment to diversity;
- Dedication to teaching and genuine interest in working with students in a scaffolded undergraduate research curriculum and in a small, collegial liberal arts setting that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction;
- Interest in broad service to the College, such as academic advising and committee work.
The following are strongly preferred:
- At least two years of college teaching experience;
- A competitive track record of scholarship.
