Assistant Professor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at North Carolina State University is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) to begin on August 1, 2023. We are seeking a faculty member to continue to grow a graduate-level program with a TESOL concentration in teaching and research. This faculty member will also teach in our ESL Add-On Program that prepares students to teach English abroad or at community colleges.

The successful candidate is expected to establish and maintain a rigorous research agenda, as well as to actively serve on department, college, and university committees. Duties include program-building, as well as a commitment to service and extension. Inclusiveness and diversity are academic imperatives at our university.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to improving access to higher education for students from underrepresented groups.

Minimum Education and Experience: Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics or other related fields with an emphasis on TESOL.

Other Required Qualifications: Proficiency in one or more languages other than English; Active in current English as a second and/or foreign language research and professional organizations; and Expertise in teaching theories and a solid grounding in research methodology appropriate for directing research projects in TESOL.

Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience teaching English to Speakers of other Languages domestically or internationally; Interest and experience in online publication (e.g., as a reviewer and/or (associate) editor); and Experience teaching online and developing asynchronous courses.

This tenure track position carries a 2-2 course load and includes the following courses:

  • FL 524 Linguistics for ESL Professionals
  • FL 527 Materials and Methods in Teaching English as a Second Language
  • FL 541 Strategies and Curriculum Design in Teaching English as a Foreign Language
  • FL 675 Special Project in TESOL (Directing MA Culminating Projects)
