Description:

 

The Centre for Medieval Studies and the Department of English in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in the area of Old English Language and Literature. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter. This will be a joint appointment between the Centre for Medieval Studies (51%) and the Department of English (49%).

 

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Old English Language or Literature or a related area (e.g., Medieval Latin or Old Norse) with a clearly demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing strengths at the Centre for Medieval Studies and the Department of English .

 

The Graduate C entre for Medieval Studies is the leading research centre in North America dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of the languages and cultures that flourished during the Middle Ages. The Centre consists of a student body of approximately 60 students, enrolled in the Master of Arts, the Doctor of Philosophy and several Collaborative Specializations, and an equal number of distinguished faculty, most of whom cross-appointed with various departments. Situated in one of the most diverse cities in the world, the Department of English reflects that diversity in its approach to English as a world language. Our graduate faculty enjoy an outstanding reputation for their rigorous historical scholarship and for their innovative theoretical, cultural, and interdisciplinary approaches to literary study. The Centre for Medieval Studies and the Department of English offer opportunities for teaching, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and collaborative and interdisciplinary research in both medieval culture and English language and literature in historical depth and across a broad geographical range. The Centre for Medieval Studies is also the administrative home of the Dictionary of Old English (DOE), which defines the English language’s vocabulary of the first centuries (AD 600–1150), using today’s most advanced technology. As a leading scholar in the field, the successful candidate will engage with this project and have the opportunity to enhance critical links with scholars across Canada and abroad as well as to strengthen the DOE’s academic and advancement efforts, fully supported by the Faculty of Arts and Science’s Office of Advancement.

 

Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

 

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) including a strong teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference.

 

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

 

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
