Assistant Professor, I2, Italian

The Department of Modern Languages and Classics at The University of Alabama invites applications for a non-tenure track renewable contract assistant professor of Italian starting August 16, 2023. The successful applicant will serve as Italian Language Program Director of a vibrant and established coordinated program of elementary and intermediate language courses. Duties include developing curriculum, supervising instructors, and teaching both undergraduate Italian classes and graduate classes on foreign language teaching methods and Second Language Acquisition. Service expectations will be commensurate with rank. Evidence of ongoing research is essential.

Area of specialization in Italian is open, although a strong background in foreign language pedagogy, web-based instructional technologies, or second language acquisition is highly desirable. Required qualifications include PhD in Italian Studies or related fields in hand by August 15, 2023; native or near-native fluency in Italian and English; excellence in teaching at all college levels of Italian language and culture in a comparative perspective; strong understanding of current best practices in world language pedagogy; experience with current instructional technologies and online language teaching; willingness and ability to teach either in-person or online as needed; commitment to curricular innovation, including the creation of online language courses and translation courses; strong interest in supporting the program’s outreach and recruitment efforts; ability to work collegially and effectively with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
