The School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC), a multidisciplinary unit within the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts (IAC), is engaged in rethinking the role of humanities research and education in an increasingly technological and global environment. Our faculty is committed to generating humanistic perspectives on a technological world through interdisciplinary research at both theoretical and applied levels. The School also includes the Institute's Communication Center and the Writing and Communication Program that encompasses the Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, providing discipline-specific courses for campus-wide audiences.
The School of LMC offers a BS in Literature, Media, and Communication (BSLMC), a BS in Computational Media (BSCM) jointly administered with the College of Computing; an MS and a PhD in Digital Media (DM); and an MS in Global Media Cultures (MS-GMC) jointly administered with the School of Modern Languages. The School also participates in the interdisciplinary MS in Human-Computing Interaction (MS-HCI) in conjunction with the Schools of Interactive Computing, Industrial Design, and Psychology. Graduates of LMC's diverse degree programs are well-positioned to develop and contribute to emerging fields poised at the intersection of technology and culture, from production and design to critical analysis.
The BSLMC degree includes threads in Literature, Media, Communication, Social Justice, Design, and Science, Technology, and Culture. The shared BSCM degree provides students with a grasp of the computer as a medium; the technical, the historical-critical, and the applied. Students gain significant hands-on and theoretical knowledge of computing, as well as an understanding of interaction design and the history of media. Concentrations include game design, interaction design, and film and media. The Digital Media degrees offer graduate education focused on digital media design and criticism. With a shared emphasis on “making with meaning,” students and faculty work together to investigate and develop media technologies—for social empowerment, activism, learning, and play—through approaches that transcend conventional disciplinary divides. Building on the insights of Media Studies, Human-Computer Interaction, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and design, we are committed to pioneering new forms of critical humanistic scholarship and to transforming the tools of both creative expression and civic life to illuminate the social and cultural opportunities, as well as the unintended consequences, of nascent technologies.
The School’s commitment to social justice in research, education, and community engagement is exemplified in existing areas of focus such as Civic Media, Black Media Studies, and Cultural Studies of science, race, and gender. Collaboration across the school, college, and university is encouraged with faculty and students working in these and related fields.
The School of Literature Media and Communication (LMC) at Georgia Tech seeks to appoint one visiting assistant professor for Spring 2023 and Fall 2023 (appointment term January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023). The successful candidate will contribute service, conduct research, and teach a 2-2 load, providing classes that contribute to the Film and Communication offerings of our undergraduate major, including courses such as “Intro to Film,” “Studies in Film and TV,” “Cinema and Digital Culture,” and “Visual Communication.” Further information about the major can be found on the School website: https://www.lmc.gatech.edu/
Ph.D. or terminal degree in an appropriate discipline in hand by start of appointment.
We seek a research active individual whose expertise and teaching experience strongly positions them to contribute to our undergraduate major. We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose work engages with issues of social justice broadly conceived.
