Senior Instructional Professor (Open Rank) and Associate Director, Program in Creative Writing

The Humanities Collegiate Division and the Department of English at the University of Chicago are accepting applications for a Senior Instructional Professor (open rank) and Associate Director, who will assist with the management of the Program in Creative Writing, and teach a maximum of four courses a year in that curriculum (in the candidate’s specialization) and in the Creative Writing Core. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure-track position with a three-year or five-year renewable term, depending on rank, to start September 1, 2023.

In consultation with the Director of Creative Writing and the Program Manager, the Associate Director will be responsible for planning, staffing, and coordinating all Creative Writing courses, including the supervision and evaluation of unionized lecturers and instructional staff. We seek candidates proven to be highly effective teachers of Creative Writing as well as experienced program administrators; in addition to the Associate Director’s teaching responsibilities, the pedagogical mentoring and supervision of lecturers are central to this position. The Associate Director will also develop the profile and mission of the Program in Creative Writing, advancing its Development Plan, and will help to enable Creative Writing and Arts programs in the University more broadly. Course assignments and other duties of the Associate Director will be determined annually by the Director of Creative Writing.

An MFA or PhD in Creative Writing is required. Applicants must have at least one book publication, experience in program coordination or management, and extensive teaching experience at the university or post-secondary level.
