Assistant Professor of German

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Rhode Island is a collaborative, forward-leaning, and dynamic team of individuals committed across all languages to the departmental priorities of proficiency-based teaching, intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and languages for the professions. We collectively believe in diversity of thought, ideas and, especially, people. Our faculty come from multiple and diverse ethnic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds and we unite around our three afore-mentioned priorities with open-mindedness, collegiality, mutual respect, and a spirit of consensus. We are furthermore committed to faculty training in the areas of our strategic priorities as well as in respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion. For example, we regularly invite nationally renowned speakers to provide ongoing training for the department in intercultural communicative competence and proficiency-based teaching; and we collectively organize and complete training and micro-credentials in inclusive teaching and antiracism. Our department is one of the largest undergraduate language departments in the nation, and it has a leadership team that includes a chair, an associate chair, six language section heads, a proficiency coordinator, an intercultural communicative competence coordinator, and a Language Center director. We also house the Chinese Flagship Language Program as well as five other signature programs: the International Engineering Program, International Business Program, International Computer Science Program, the International Studies and Diplomacy Program, and the International Pharmaceutical Sciences Program. Our department and our departmental initiatives are robustly supported by the College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of the Provost; and our commitment to hiring, supporting, and retaining faculty members from diverse backgrounds falls within the larger College and University strategic plans, and especially the URI Provost’s Strategic Plan for Diversity, which we encourage all interested job candidates to read: https://web.uri.edu/provost/files/Agenda-for-Change-2021.Final_.pdf. The department has been successful in bringing in outside funding to support our educational and research initiatives and the University values our faculty’s contributions in this area.
