Professor of Practice of Latinx Studies / LAS / Spanish

The Department of Languages and Cultures at Loyola University New Orleans welcomes applications from energetic and committed professors of Latinx and/or Latin American Studies for a full-time appointment as Professor of Practice, with a three-year renewable contract to begin in August 2023. The successful candidate will design, propose, and teach Latinx and LAS content courses in English and Spanish as well as teach existing Spanish language classes at all levels. The position requires teaching 4 classes per semester (fall and spring, for a total of 8 classes per academic year). We are open to all sub-fields, but preference will be given to candidates with expertise in one or more of the following knowledge formations: Afro-Latinx Studies; Global Border Studies; New Media Studies; Trans, Sexuality, and Gender Latinx Studies. Experience with heritage Spanish a plus.

Qualified applicants will hold a Ph.D. in Latinx, Spanish, and/or Latin American Studies or a related field, demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, and provide evidence of active scholarship and publication. The department is especially interested in applicants who can offer classes on Latin America and/or Latinx Studies from multiple disciplinary perspectives, including humanities, arts, and social sciences. Near native fluency in Spanish and English is required. The successful candidate will begin on a three-year, renewable contract with the possibility of moving to permanent status. The salary range is competitive.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create new courses, adapt existing courses, and teach various interdisciplinary courses about Latin America and U.S. Latinx cultures in both English and Spanish
  • Prepare and teach Spanish language classes at all levels
  • Incorporate prior research and publication into classes designed and taught
  • Mentor students
  • Participate in department meetings and functions

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in LAS, Spanish, Latinx Studies, or related field
  • Fluency in Spanish and English
  • Teaching experience at the university level

 

PREFERENCES

  • Mentoring and advising experience at the university level
  • Active research agenda
