Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream – Creative Writing

The Department of English at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time teaching stream appointment in Creative Writing. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter. Applicants must have earned a PhD/MFA/MA degree in Creative Writing, or a PhD in English by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching literature and creative writing at the university level; a demonstrated commitment to the scholarship of teaching and learning as it pertains to creative writing is desirable. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development. Development of online material/lectures would be considered an asset. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry. Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing. The successful candidate will have a strong record of publishing/production in at least one of the following areas: fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, scripted media, comics/graphic novels. Candidates must also show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and to the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, as demonstrated through the application materials. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position will be held in the English Department at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Located in the east end of Toronto, in the beautiful Highland Creek Valley, UTSC English is home to a thriving creative writing program and writing community. The successful applicant will bring their talents and vision to bear on our flourishing Major and Minor programs in Creative Writing, which include an annual Writer-in-Residence initiative, the student-run journal Scarborough Fair, the annual UTSC Creative Writing contest, and the Creative Writing group’s weekly meetings and field trips. Most importantly, the successful applicant will teach a dedicated, talented, and supportive group of emerging writers. Many of our alumni have continued their creative writing studies at the graduate level, won contests, and published in journals, chapbook, and trade book form. The Department also offers Specialist, Major, and Minor programs in English literature, as well as a Minor in Literature and Film Studies. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in service activities in the Department.
