Position description

 



The Department of Linguistics within the Division of Social Sciences at UC San Diego (http://ling.ucsd.edu/) is committed to building an excellent and diverse faculty, staff, and student body, and invites applications from candidates whose experience has prepared them to contribute to our commitment. The department is currently accepting applications for dually appointed Academic Coordinator/Lecturer positions in Linguistics Language Program (LLP) (http://llp.ucsd.edu) for German, Italian and/or French languages.

In their role as Academic Coordinator, the incumbent is responsible for all aspects of their respective language program, including placement, course design, syllabi, assignment of grades, and materials development and selection, as well as training, supervision and evaluation of instructors (lecturers, teaching assistants, tutors). The Academic Coordinator conducts weekly instructor meetings for each level, observes classes and meets with instructors individually to discuss their performance. They also meet regularly with the Academic Coordinators for other languages, the LLP staff, and the LLP Director to set program goals, and establish and implement overall policies.

As a concurrently appointed lecturer, the incumbent is expected to teach one or more language course(s) during the academic year (conversation and /or analysis).
While these positions may be full or part-time, the incumbent will always be appointed in both positions concurrently.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

MA or other advanced degree in Linguistics, Language (i.e., French, German, Italian), and/or Second Language Teaching, or a related field

Native or near-native proficiency for the language of instruction and professional proficiency in English

A record of excellence in language teaching (at least one academic quarter/semester)

Experience in designing a curriculum, establishing grading policies, and creating syllabi, lesson plans, tests and other course content (at least one academic quarter/semester)

Preferred qualifications

  • Formal training in linguistics, second language acquisition, and/or language teaching
