Assistant or Associate Professor of Creative Writing (Fiction) (Tenure Track/Tenured)

Position

The Department of English at Old Dominion University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Creative Writing, with appointment to begin in July 2023.

The successful candidate will join an accomplished, collaborative, and diverse faculty and student body and teach a range of courses in creative writing and literature at the graduate level, in addition to undergraduate introductory and general education courses in the field of creative writing; develop courses in their area/s of specialization and contribute to program and department curricular development. They will supervise thesis projects, participate actively in the life of Old Dominion University’s nationally recognized MFA program, and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to promoting and enhancing the diversity of the faculty, graduate, and undergraduate student populations. Faculty course load is commensurate with service, experience, and research. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Required Qualifications:

  1. MFA in Creative Writing or Ph.D. in English/Creative Writing (degree by the time of appointment), with the ability to teach fiction.
  2. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level should have published at least 1 book, and at the Associate level at least 2 books, from a nationally recognized press
  3. Evidence of an active/ongoing publishing record
  4. Established record of successful and innovative teaching and mentorship
  5. Ability to serve as a mentor to students from historically underrepresented groups
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strengths in young adult literature, translation, graphic literature, literary editing and publishing, and/or other hybrid genres
  • Publishing and pedagogy that explicitly engages urgent issues of the Global South (race, gender, economic and other difference
  • Publishing and pedagogy that highlights marginalized perspectives including but not limited to those of African American, Latinx, Native American, Asian American, and immigrant literature.

Department of English

The Department of English is dedicated to offering rigorous academic programs that prepare our graduates for advanced study and a range of professions. Our department offers a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in English. Our B.A. and M.A. degrees have concentrations in Technical and Professional Writing; our PhD program has concentrations in Rhetoric, Writing, and Discourse Studies; Literary and Cultural Studies; and Technology and Media Studies. We also offer a graduate certificate in Professional Writing. All programs offer onsite, hybrid, and online delivery modalities. ODU has a long history of providing distance education courses with a robust, innovative technology infrastructure and well-equipped computer labs for instruction.
