Assistant or Associate Professor of Medical Rhetoric (Tenure Track)

Position:

The Department of English at Old Dominion University invites applications for an Assistant (advanced preferred) or Associate Professor position in Medical Rhetoric to begin July 2023. This is a 10-month appointment with a full course load and opportunities for summer teaching or administrative work. We are open to applicants from a wide array of approaches and backgrounds in medical rhetoric including but not limited to health justice; rhetoric of science; disability studies; racial justice; regulatory policy; feminist, queer, and trans health; and public understanding of science. Opportunities for original course offerings in each program will be given.

This position affords researchers the unique opportunity to engage at the intersection of a recent institutional partnership established between Old Dominion University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Norfolk State University. This partnership originated through a regional effort to focus on health equity for underserved residents of the area and affords the successful applicant with an exciting space for collaborative, interdisciplinary, and community-based research and grant opportunities. There are also potential collaborative opportunities with the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Technical Communication, or a related field, and they must be able to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level. Successful applicants will teach in our undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programs in online, hybrid, and onsite capacities.

Department of English

The Department of English is dedicated to offering rigorous academic programs that prepare our graduates for advanced study and a range of professions. Our department offers a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in English. Our B.A. and M.A. degrees have concentrations in Technical and Professional Writing; our PhD program has concentrations in Rhetoric, Writing, and Discourse Studies; Literary and Cultural Studies; and Technology and Media Studies. We also offer a graduate certificate in Professional Writing. All programs offer onsite, hybrid, and online delivery modalities.
