Assistant Professor of Creative Writing (Poetry/Nonfiction) (Tenure Track)


The Department of English at Old Dominion University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Creative Writing (poetry/nonfiction) with an expected start date of July 25, 2023. The position is open to a writer whose primary interest is poetry but who also publishes nonfiction. The successful candidate will teach creative writing classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise graduate-student thesis projects, participate actively in the life of ODU’s nationally recognized MFA program, and have a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Required Qualifications:

  1. MFA in Creative Writing or PhD in English/Creative Writing (degree required by the time of appointment), with the ability to teach poetry and creative nonfiction.
  2. At least 1 book published by nationally recognized press
  3. Evidence of an active/ongoing publishing record
  4. Established record of successful and innovative teaching and mentorship
  5. Ability to serve as a mentor to students from historically underrepresented groups
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 

Preferred Qualifications:

An ideal applicant will have strengths in multiple genres and/or hybrid work and publishing and pedagogy that shows strong interest in and explicitly engages narratives of medicine, disability and the body, ecopoetry, environmental justice, environmental literature, and related areas.
