Assistant Professor of English, Rhetoric and Composition Writing Program Administrator




The Department of English at Whitworth University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of English specializing in rhetoric and composition (beginning Fall 2023). Highly desirable secondary areas of specialization include (but are not limited to) writing programs and centers, professional/technical/digital writing, and public and cultural rhetorics. Candidates should be prepared to support Whitworth's Christian mission and its commitments to free expression, civil discourse, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will direct the University Writing Program (UWP) and teach first-year writing, upper division courses appropriate to specialization, and lower division courses appropriate to preparation.

The Department of English includes eight full time faculty members and is situated within Whitworth's College of Arts and Sciences, which bears primary responsibility for providing an education grounded in the tradition of the liberal arts and sciences and is committed to the integration of faith and learning. The Department offers an integrated English BA, challenging students with courses in literature, creative writing, and writing studies, along with an English/Language Arts BA designed for preservice English teachers. The Department offers minors in literature, creative writing, writing studies, film and visual narratives, editing and publishing, and TESOL; the Department also support the University's interdisciplinary minors in US cultural studies, medieval/early modern studies, and women's and gender studies. The Department houses the University Writing Program and provides leadership both for the university writing center and for writing across the curriculum initiatives on campus. STARTING DATE: July 1, 2023

Teaching load is 3-1-3 (3 in regular semesters and 1 during a shortened January term); 2 of those 7 courses will be reassigned to administrating the University Writing Program. The successful candidate will teach first-year composition, upper-division seminars in area of specialization (rhetorical theory), and lower-division courses (such as critical strategies) as needed by the department and/or of interest to the candidate. Additional courses in areas such as business or technical communication, rhetorics of science and health, digital humanities, critical race studies, etc., possible depending on expertise.     REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: PhD or ABD in English, rhetoric and composition, writing studies, or related field.
