Brief Summary of Job Duties
The English & Language Arts department seeks a visionary scholar with a proven track record of academic leadership. The successful applicant will have graduate and undergraduate teaching experience; an established record of scholarship; the ability to acquire funding for programming and faculty development; and the ability to supervise 35+ faculty members in both graduate and undergraduate programs. The chair will be appointed at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor.
Job Duties
The Chair serves as the administrator of the department and provides leadership in all matters related to the Department under the direction of the Dean. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Facilitating the operation of the department through administrative, fiscal, and assessment tasks.
- Assuming responsibility for setting and meeting enrollment, retention, and graduation projections in line with the University's goals.
- Advising graduating seniors.
- Working with faculty, administrators, and staff to support a research and scholarly agenda consistent with Morgan's trajectory toward Carnegie classification as an R1 university.
- Collaborating with area coordinators in assisting students.
- Maintaining effective engagement of faculty with open communication, continuous improvement efforts, and the pursuit of the institution's strategic initiatives.
- Carrying out responsibilities associated with annual faculty evaluation, tenure, and promotion.
- Serving on the College of Liberal Arts Management Team with Dean-appointed colleagues.
- Representing departmental interests at the College and University levels.
- Maintaining an active and relevant research agenda consistent with expectations of a full professor at a doctorate granting institution.
- Teaching one large lecture or two courses each semester.
- Managing salary, travel, and office budgets.
- Creating the departmental schedule, including graduate, undergraduate major, and general education courses. Supervising full-time and adjunct faculty.
- Overseeing the production of annual conferences and the Adele V. Holden Creative Writing Competitions.
- Documenting departmental activities, including the compilation of the annual report.
Requested Minimum Qualifications
- Earned PhD in English, Comparative Literature, or a closely related field.
- Achieved the rank of Full Professor or have the qualifications necessary to earn the rank of Full Professor with tenure at Morgan State
