About this position

The Emory & Henry English Department is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor to start in August 2023. Our ideal candidate will be a specialist in the American South with expertise in teaching poetry (either as a poet or scholar). We are especially interested in applicants whose work focuses on any of the following traditions: Appalachian/Affrilachian/Gullah, Native/Indigenous American, Latinx, Asian American, or African American Literature.

Our future colleague will teach within their specialty, share in the teaching of American literature, annually teach composition, and offer interdisciplinary courses for our CORE program and/or Appalachian Studies/Civic Innovation. The annual teaching load is 20-24 credit hours a year, though course credit for college service is possible.

 

Essential Duties

  • Teach service courses annually
    • First-Year Writing (1 or 2 courses per year)
    • American Literature survey (1 course per year)
    • Studies in Poetry (1 course per year)
    • Courses in Appalachian Studies/Civic Innovation/CORE curriculum (1 course per year)
    • Upper-Level courses in specialization (1 course per year)
  • Collaborate with the Appalachian Center for Civic Life on the planning and direction of the annual Literary Festival, one of the college’s three annual literary festivals.  This will include editor duties with the Iron Mountain Review, a journal associated with the Festival.
  • Take an active role in the department’s operation—advise students, develop courses, attend on-campus recruitment events, etc.
  • Contribute to the college’s strategic objectives and service needs, in such areas as Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, and interdisciplinarity and retention.

Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in English at time of employment (MFA or PhD)
  • College teaching experience
  • Experience planning/organizing conferences, speaker series, or literary festivals (preferred)
  • Experience or Interest in developing courses in Appalachian Literature (preferred)
