Bard College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Japanese, literature, language, and culture, to begin in Fall 2023. We are particularly interested in scholars whose work is engaged with Japan in translingual or transnational context, with period of specialization open. Such research directions might include: Japanese literature’s engagement with other regions, especially Southeast Asia; transcultural exchange prior to the modern era; writing and the colonial and postcolonial histories of the Japanese empire; the cultural production of the Japanese diaspora in the Americas; the work of immigrant authors in Japan; or deep engagement with the practice of literary translation, among others. The position is supported by a generous grant from the Japan Foundation.
The position requires a lively interest in undergraduate teaching at a small liberal arts college and a vigorous and active commitment to scholarship. Candidates should have completed the Ph.D. prior to appointment and have primary training in the fields of Japanese literary, media, or cultural studies. Ability to teach Japanese language at all levels and courses of one’s specialty is expected.
