Professor and Department Chair (English)

The Department of English in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) invites applications for the position of Department Chair at the rank of a tenured Full Professor or advanced Associate Professor to begin July 1, 2020. We seek a candidate who specializes in Latinx literary and cultural studies. The selected candidate must demonstrate their ability and desire to work collegially with faculty from diverse cultural backgrounds. The selected candidate will hold the Brackenridge Endowed Chair in Literature and the Humanities. This endowment will provide resources for maintaining an energetic research program that amplifies the profile of the department and university.

UTSA is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) with a 53% Latinx student population and one of the fastest growing public universities in Texas. The Department of English houses multiple degree and certificate programs, including a BA degree program in English with concentrations available in Professional Writing, Creative Writing, or English Language Arts and Reading; an MA degree program that emphasizes general knowledge of literatures written primarily in English; and a Ph.D. program with opportunities for advanced study in cross-cultural, transnational approaches to English language and literary studies, with coursework required in U.S. Latinx literature and rhetoric and composition.

The most competitive candidates will have administrative experience and demonstrate a vision for leading a thriving multidisciplinary department at a Hispanic-Serving Institution on the path to becoming a Tier 1 research institution. The successful candidate must have the ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population and be committed to assisting the University’s commitment to thrive as a Hispanic Serving Institution. Candidates are also expected to have a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and exhibit a strong commitment to interdisciplinarity.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading development and implementation of long-term departmental goals
  • Recruiting students and faculty members
  • Fostering faculty development and leadership
  • Developing undergraduate and graduate curricula
  • Teaching graduate and undergraduate courses as appropriate
  • Maintaining an active research agenda
  • Contributing to the university and community through service activities

Required Qualifications:

  • Full or advanced associate professor
  • Doctorate in English or related discipline
  • Evidence of research in Latinx literary and cultural studies
  • Substantial record of exemplary research and teaching

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Administrative experience as a department chair, associate chair, program director, research center director, associate dean, or comparable managerial role
  • Evidence of ability to secure grants and external funding
  • Experience mentoring graduate students and chairing dissertations
  • Evidence of teaching in Latinx literary and cultural studies or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience in the recruitment and/or retention of underrepresented students, including students of color

  • A sample syllabus for a PhD-level course that emphasizes some aspect of Latinx literary and cultural studies;
