The Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Northern Illinois University (NIU) invites applications for a visiting assistant professor in the field of Secondary English Education.  The successful candidate for this position will possess a doctorate in Secondary English Education or related field, have had at least 3 years of secondary teaching experience, present strong evidence of excellence in research and teaching within Secondary English Education, and promote a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students.


The NIU English department has a long tradition of excellence in teacher preparation. Our graduates are employed in schools around the state. The licensure program offers students equity-minded and culturally-relevant approaches to the practical, subject area and theoretical knowledge they need to succeed as professionals in English Language Arts. In addition to the undergraduate secondary teacher licensure track in English, the department also offers a M.A. leading to teacher licensure and M.A. and Ph.D. programs with a concentration in English Education.

Position Summary

The visiting faculty member will teach three courses per semester in 2023–2024. We seek a candidate in the field of Secondary English Education with a commitment to preparing teaching candidates to work in schools with linguistically and culturally diverse populations. The candidate would reveal this commitment through excellence in the areas of teaching, service, and scholarship, and through collaborative efforts with other teacher preparation programs at the university. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses using culturally-relevant and inclusive NCTE standards
  • Engaging in appropriate scholarly activities in the field
  • Collaborating and contributing to ongoing research projects with the English education faculty
  • Providing service to the university and the profession
  • Working collaboratively with faculty and administrators to meet accreditation requirements
  • Developing university/school partnerships to enhance programs with particular attention to equity and diversity
  • Contributing to M.A. and Ph.D. exam committees and thesis and dissertations committees, as needed


Minimum/Basic Required Qualifications

  • Earned Doctorate in Secondary English Education or related field, or anticipated earned Doctorate in Secondary English Education or related field by August 2023;
  • Three or more years of Secondary English teaching experience in public school setting;


Additional Requirements

  • Demonstrated potential for maintaining an active research and publication agenda.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of edTPA or equivalent teacher performance assessment;
  • Experience supervising teacher candidates in the field or in supervising teachers in a school;
  • Experiences working with diverse populations of learners;
  • Demonstrated potential for building community partnerships;
  • Knowledge of accreditation processes;
  • Experience providing professional development for teachers;
  • Commitment to contributing to the department’s ongoing research and scholarship in English education;
  • Mentorship of students in professional activities, such as presenting at academic conferences and writing journal articles.


Salary Statement

Salary range $45,000-$55,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Appointment Status

A visiting position appointment for 2023-2024 academic year.


Proposed Starting Date

Position begins August 16, 2023
