Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Spanish, to begin fall 2023.

The successful candidate will teach a 3-3 load consisting of relevant undergraduate and graduate courses in both the Department of World Languages and Cultures and the Watson School of Education, specifically world language teaching methods courses required for licensure, and they will teach and supervise students in world language practicum courses required for licensure. The teaching load will include at least 1-2 courses per year at all levels of undergraduate Spanish language and/or upper-level undergraduate/graduate Spanish courses in their specialty.

As Coordinator of the World Language Teacher Education Program, the successful candidate will advise undergraduate students majoring in Spanish/French with teacher licensure and graduate students pursuing the MAT or MEd in Spanish. The successful candidate will serve as liaison to the UNCW Watson School of Education and the State of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

To instantiate our values of Access, Equity, and Diversity, UNCW’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is embarking on our third year of a cohort hire initiative. This year, our focus is in the areas of Environmental and Social Justice, prioritizing analytics and approaches that center examinations of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, disability, democracy and citizenship, and Indigenous or otherwise decolonizing methodologies. We are actively building a network of researchers, scholars, and artists that will support the ongoing work in which we are engaged and to set a path forward as we grow these areas of critical study into regional and national strengths. This initiative is part of a larger set of coordinated diversity and inclusion initiatives within the UNCW Division of Academic Affairs. The position of Assistant Professor in Spanish/Coordinator of World Language Teacher Education with the Department of World Languages and Cultures is part of this initiative.

The successful candidate will join our Department of World Languages and Cultures with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence. They will be expected to contribute actively to these efforts through their teaching, research, and service by prioritizing analytics and approaches that contribute to critical examinations of race, ethnicity, and/or gender. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Candidates must possess D. or Ed.D. in the field of Spanish, language pedagogy, or closely related discipline on or by August 1, 2023.
  • Applicants who are ABD for the terminal degree may be considered if doctoral degree is conferred by August 1, 2023.
  • Native or near native proficiency in Spanish and English
  • At least two years’ experience teaching K-12 level

 

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Preference given to candidates with:

  • Research specialization in language pedagogy with an emphasis on social justice approaches
  • Strong background in Spanish and World Language Teacher Education
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching
  • Demonstrated commitment to and strong potential for research
  • Experience in supervision, which may include but is not limited to supervision of world language or ESL educators
  • At least two years’ experience teaching a world language or ESL at K-12 level
  • Knowledge of French a plus 

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences is one of the largest academic units at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. With over 50 faculty members, we offer on-campus and online master’s degrees in Spanish; post-baccalaureate certificate in Hispanic Studies; a combined BA/MA program in Spanish; bachelor’s degrees in French, German, and Spanish; and minors in Classics, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. We also offer classes in American Sign Language, Arabic, and Italian. Our classes contribute to core general education requirements for all undergraduate degrees at UNCW. Students in the Undergraduate World Language Teacher Education program major in Spanish or French and choose the K-12 teacher licensure specialty. The program features small class sizes, dedicated faculty, individualized advising, a full-time internship, and high job placement rates. The Watson College of Education’s graduate programs, including the MAT and M.Ed. in Spanish Education, train future and current Spanish language educators. 

College/School Information
The College of Arts and Sciences is UNCW’s largest academic unit and awards approximately two-thirds of the university’s academic credits. Ours is a comprehensive arts and sciences college comprising the arts, the humanities, the mathematical and natural sciences, and the social and behavioral sciences.

The College’s twenty-five units offer a variety of undergraduate majors leading to the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Bachelor of Music, and the Bachelor of Science. Through applied learning, students in the College gain direct hands-on experience with the skills of their major fields as an essential part of their preparation for life and career.

In addition to its undergraduate major and minor programs, the College is chiefly responsible for the curriculum that comprises the UNCW’s University Studies Program, through which all UNCW undergraduates gain a foundation in the liberal arts and develop the transferable skills essential for life in the twenty-first century. The College strives in its undergraduate programs and in its University Study offerings to nurture creative thinking, intellectual curiosity, diversity and inclusion, and academic integrity in students while providing them with a solid foundation of knowledge in their chosen fields. Upon completion of their undergraduate studies, College of Arts and Sciences students will have the necessary preparation for rewarding careers, advanced study, effective citizenship, and meaningful lives.

Graduate degrees awarded in the College of Arts and Sciences include the Master of Arts, the Master of Fine Arts, the Master of Public Administration, the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy (Marine Biology and Psychology). In addition, the nationally awarded Graduate Liberal Studies program offers a personalized curriculum of interdisciplinary study leading to the Master of Arts. Post-baccalaureate certificates in Applied Statistics, Environmental Studies, Forensic Science, Conflict Management and Resolution, Gender Studies and Hispanic Studies are available. Graduate programs in the College are designed to develop intellectual competence and to prepare the student for careers in business, industry, government, teaching or for further study at the doctoral level.
