The School of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track, instructional assistant or instructional associate professor position with a with a nine-month academic appointment with the possibility of renewal. The start date for this position is August 15, 2023; classes begin on August 24, 2023.
The Visual, Material & Performance Cultures Section seeks individuals to teach performance studies practices, theories, and methodologies. Courses might include PERF 101: Introduction to Performance Studies, PERF 303: Creating Performance, PERF 481: Senior Capstone, and seminars related to the candidate’s area of expertise. Preference will be given to diverse candidates whose pedagogy integrates theory and practice. We are particularly interested in candidates with interdisciplinary backgrounds in disability studies, environmental humanities, gender studies, and race and ethnic studies.
In addition to the primary teaching responsibilities, candidates are also expected to mentor students' creative and/or scholarly work, develop and foster new curricula, serve on school and/or university committees, and perform other duties as necessary.
Texas A&M is one of the first universities in the U.S. to offer an undergraduate degree in performance studies. Students combine creative practices and scholarly research to know the world better through performance. Performance Studies is distinctive in its integration of music, theater, and other cultural expressions. Academic programs include the B.A. and M.A. in Performance Studies.
The School of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts is a new School within the Texas A&M University System and has a diverse and dynamic mission with 60 faculty and over 15 staff members and a projected exponential growth in the next 5 years. The school was formed from three departments/programs spread across the university: the Department of Visualization, the Department of Performance Studies and the Dance Science Program. The mission of the school places a heavy emphasis on faculty and student collaboration and interdisciplinary work in both scholarly and creative research. Texas A&M University leadership has charged the new school with developing innovative research and creative works, public performances, and degree offerings at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels that build upon our strength in merging art and science. The new school is projected to move into a new, $175m state-of-the-art visual and performing arts center. Construction is slated to begin in 2024.
The position requires a completed M.A. or M.M. in a performance-related field. A Ph.D. or academic background in Performance Studies is preferred.
