Assistant professorship or Associate Professor of Spanish

The Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese at the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship or a tenured associate professorship in medieval or early modern Peninsular Spanish literature and culture. The candidate will be a collaborative, productive scholar with native, near-native, or heritage fluency in Spanish and English who is committed to interdisciplinary approaches to the study of texts. This hire will contribute to the Department’s innovative graduate and undergraduate curricula and mentoring in Spanish. Demonstrated excellence in teaching is preferred. We seek candidates committed to cooperative approaches to program building. We welcome applicants from a variety of different specializations, perspectives, and methodologies, including, but not limited to, those who study: Arabic, Basque, Catalan, Hebrew, Galician, or Portuguese literatures and cultures; diaspora and migration; digital humanities; material and visual culture; race, religion, and ethnicity; theater and performance studies; women, gender, and sexuality studies. 

Application review will begin December 2, 2022, and the position will remain open until filled. The appointment begins in the fall semester of 2023. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Spanish, Iberian or Hispanic Studies or related field by the time of the appointment. In addition, applicants for the position of Associate Professor must have a minimum of three years of experience; candidates with six year or more years of teaching experience will be preferred. Scholars from underrepresented communities, including Native American, Indigenous, African American, Latinx, Asian American, queer, neurodiverse, and differently abled scholars, are especially invited to apply.
