The Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a Bridge to Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of Mexican studies, with a specialization in any of (but not limited to) the following contemporary fields: 20th and 21st Mexican literature, film, or other areas of Mexican cultural studies. UIC’s Bridge to Faculty program is designed to recruit scholars with the goal of faculty transition in the department after two years. Subject to satisfactory performance and University approval, this position may be re-appointed for a second year. Successful post-docs may have the opportunity to transition to faculty starting2025-2026 academic year. This recruitment initiative aims to attract and retain promising scholars to UIC as well as diversify our faculty. Postdocs will participate in a mentoring experience within the department, and they will have the opportunity to meet other postdocs through cohort-based events and workshops organized by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Engagement. The Bridge to the Faculty Program is funded by the Chancellor’s Office and administered through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Engagement. 

 

The Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies is comprised of an interdisciplinary group of scholars dedicated to working in a wide range of fields, including literary studies, critical theory, psychoanalysis, gender studies, political theory, cultural memory, trauma and poverty and violence studies, humanities and health, the Anthropocene and environmental studies, the Southern Cone, Iberia, and film and visual studies. Faculty members have exceptional research and teaching opportunities as a result of collaborations and affiliations with other units in the College, including but not limited to Latin American and Latino Studies, UIC’s Institute for the Humanities, and Department of English. UIC is located close to the historical Mexican-American neighborhoods of Pilsen and Little Village in the heart of Chicago, a vibrant global city. The Department serves a large Latinx student body and offers bachelor’s degrees in Spanish Literature and Cultural Studies, Hispanic Linguistics and in the Teaching of Spanish. It offers graduate degrees at both masters and doctoral levels in literature and cultural studies as well as Hispanic linguistics.  

DUTIES: 

Postdoctoral duties include teaching one course per academic year, participation in the activities of the department (including those organized by graduate students), and the pursuit of an active research agenda. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Applicants should have a native or near-native command of Spanish and a demonstrable commitment to both teaching and scholarship. 

 

Applicants should have received a PhD in an appropriate field no earlier than 2019. ABD may be considered, but the successful applicant must—without exception—have a PhD in hand by the starting date for the postdoctoral position: August 16, 2023.
