Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures with a starting date in August 2023.


The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is looking to recruit a full-time lecturer in French beginning in Fall 2023. The teaching load is 24 credits per year. The successful applicant will have experience teaching French language and literature at the undergraduate level, with the ability to teach either business French, translation for the professions, or children’s literature in French. An interest in teaching graduate seminar courses is a plus. Expertise in at least one other language offered in the department is highly desired. The ideal applicant will be committed to excellence in pedagogy and in student recruitment and retention. The applicant should also have experience advising students, and engaging in administrative tasks, such as supporting and supervising graduate student adjuncts and GTFs (Graduate Teaching Fellows). Other welcome experience and interests include: curricula development, especially of courses that will interest students in other departments in French and Francophone content. 


Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching and developing curricula for undergraduate and graduate courses in French language;
  • Providing student guidance and mentorship in the French division;
  • Programming and developing interdisciplinary courses and collaborations with departments and programs (e.g. Business, Children’s & Youth Studies, Haitian Studies, History, etc.);
  • Involvement in student recruitment and retention;
  • Development of study abroad programs;
  • Join a CUNY-wide cohort of new lecturers and engage in a program of ongoing pedagogical development
  • Engaging in administrative tasks and other service to the Department, College, and University

Lecturers at Brooklyn College-CUNY become eligible for a Certificate of Continuous Employment after 5 years of continuous full-time service in the title of Lecturer.


Vaccine Mandate


Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.





  • Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise.
  • Three years of college-level teaching experience in both language and literature courses;
  • Ability to teach undergraduate or graduate courses in French is required;
  • Ability to teach evening, weekends, face-to-face, and online.



  • Master's in French Studies or PhD with specialization in 19th/20th century French Studies from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Ability to teach a second language offered in the department;
  • Collaborate closely with the Haitian Institute and Africana Studies;
  • Experience with teaching graduate seminars;
  • Familiar or interested in medical or environmental humanities (e.g., ecocriticism).



$69,983 - $83,764; Salary commensurate with experience and credentials.
