Associate or Full Professor, Director of First-Year Writing

Director of First Year Writing, School of Literature, Writing, and Digital Humanities at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.  The SLWDH at SIUC seeks an established scholar (Associate Professor or Professor) to administer the First Year Writing Program, teach in the area of Rhetoric and Composition, and maintain an active research profile.  Appointment is on a nine-month, academic year basis, with an additional summer appointment possible.

SIU Carbondale is a doctoral/research institution; the SLWDH has 17 full-time faculty members and offers a BA, MA, and PhD in English, including in the specialization of Rhetoric and Composition.

Duties and Responsibilities: The candidate will supervise graduate assistants and lecturers in the First Year program; run a pre-semester workshop for training graduate student instructors; direct the writing program as appropriate to the university’s mission; and provide leadership in curriculum development within the program. The candidate will also teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the field of Rhetoric and Composition, and serve on MA and PhD committees.  The typical teaching load for this position is one course per term. 

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or related field, with experience administering a writing program at the college level.  The candidate must be an active researcher with a strong record of relevant publication.  

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrable teaching, scholarly, or administrative expertise in at least two of the following areas: digital writing/rhetoric; writing program administration; development of a WAC program; technical writing; service learning.
