Professor of the Practice of Writing Studies

The Thompson Writing Program at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, seeks an Assistant Professor of Practice in Writing Studies. We especially welcome candidates with scholarly and teaching expertise in any of the following areas: The Rhetorics and Literacies of Race; Writing in Economics and Finance; Scientific or Technical Writing and Rhetoric; Digital/Multi-Modal Writing/Rhetoric; Multilingual Rhetorics. A Professor of the Practice will be part of a program dedicated to teaching first-year academic writing, building writing curriculum and course offerings, and supporting faculty teaching with writing at all levels of the curriculum and for undergraduate writers throughout their careers at Duke. The Professor of the Practice track at Duke is a non-tenure, regular-rank faculty track and affords the possibility for reappointment and promotion to the Associate and Full Professor of the Practice ranks. The position has a start date of July 1, 2023, and will come with an initial four-year contract, which will be renewable for longer-term contracts, subject to successful review.

Professors of the Practice will teach four courses per year, consisting of three sections of first-year writing and one upper-division writing course of their own design.

Minimum Qualifications:
•    Ph.D. with specialization in Rhetoric and Composition, with active research agenda

•    3 years experience with college-level writing instruction
•    Experience with mentoring or providing professional development for writing faculty

Preference will be given to candidates with experience developing and teaching a range of college-level writing courses.
