Assistant Professor of English, Rhetoric & Composition (Professional/Technical Writing)

The Department of English at Winthrop University invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with specialization in Rhetoric and Composition and research expertise in Professional Writing and/or Technical Writing to join a department comprised of 18 full-time faculty, over 100 undergraduate majors and minors, and an English M.A. program.  

Winthrop University, located in the Charlotte, North Carolina metropolitan area, is a liberal arts, masters-granting state university. This 9-month, tenure-track faculty position with rank of assistant professor requires a Ph.D. in English with specialization in Rhetoric and Composition (Professional/Technical Writing emphasis) to teach courses in the B.A. and M.A. programs. (ABDs will be considered). 

Teaching responsibilities will include graduate courses and contributions to Winthrop’s innovative general education core (Composition; The Human Experience; and Critical Reading, Thinking, and Writing). This individual must have both a strong teaching record and a promising research agenda.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Teach the equivalent of four courses or twelve hours each semester, including a focus on courses in the general education core, as well as upper-division courses and graduate courses in the area of specialization.
  • Coordinate department Internship Program for majors/minors. 
  • Develop curricula and new courses for the B.A. and M.A. programs.
  • Pursue productive research in the discipline and promote undergraduate and graduate research.
  • Advise and mentor English majors.
  • Participate in professional service activities for the department, college, university, discipline, and community, as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned by the department chair.

Work Environment: This position requires daily contact with students, faculty, and staff on campus. Additionally, the successful candidate will be required to have the ability to work with the outside community, local public schools, other universities, and international schools/companies/partners.

Employment Conditions: A nine-month, full-time tenure track appointment with faculty rank. The position is pending funding availability.

  • Ph.D. in English with specialization in Rhetoric and Composition. ABDs may be considered for appointment in a non-tenure track position at the rank of instructor if all degree requirements are not completed by the expected start date of August 15, 2023.
  • Evidence of excellence in the area of Student Intellectual Development, including superior teaching skills and commitment to student learning, and, if applicable, experience with or commitment to teaching broadly diverse student populations.
  • Evidence in the area of Scholarly Activity, including an ongoing program of research and publication.
  • Evidence in the area of Professional Stewardship, including engagement with the discipline, profession, campus, and community.
  • Ability to collaborate with other programs and disciplines.
