Assistant/Associate Professor of Multilingualism and English Education

Queens College, City University of New York is seeking a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in multilingualism and English education, to begin in Fall 2023. This position’s primary responsibilities include teaching and supporting students in the college’s multilingual and introductory writing sequence (English 108: Academic Communication; English 109: Introduction to Academic Writing; English 110: College Writing 1; English 115.1/115.2: Topics in Writing). Other teaching will include advanced writing courses in the college’s writing minor and/or linguistics courses focused on bi/multilingualism and English learning. The position also requires overseeing the multilingual and introductory writing sequence and being a central participant in ongoing college-wide efforts to improve the identification, education, and general support of emergent and experienced multilingual students at QC. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Applied Linguistics, Composition and Rhetoric, TESOL, Urban Education, Writing Studies, or other related fields and an active research agenda focused on multilingualism and multilingual students. We seek innovative educators who have extensive experience teaching writing to a variety of multilingual students, and can confidently take a leading role in shaping these courses and the institutional structures that support them. The position will offer the opportunity for curricular development and design, and provide experience implementing and evaluating academic programming for multilingual students at QC.

The contractual workload for this position is 18 hours, which will be satisfied through a combination of classroom teaching and administrative release. The position will be housed in English and/or Linguistics & Communication Disorders, or another appropriate department. The person in this position will be joining an engaged community of scholars in bilingual education, linguistics, and writing who are committed to supporting the multilingual students of Queens College.

QUALIFICATIONS

PhD in Applied Linguistics, Composition and Rhetoric, TESOL, Urban Education, Writing Studies, or other related fields with an active research agenda focused on multilingualism and multilingual students.

Preferred Qualications

  • Experience in administration, curriculum development, and/or faculty development

  • 2 years of experience teaching writing at the college level

  • A record or clear promise of publication

  • A demonstrated commitment to departmental and institutional service

  • Evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching to a linguistically diverse student body, including an active, student-centered pedagogy, significant student mentoring experience, and excellent teaching and peer classroom evaluations

  • A commitment to engaged and equitable student learning as informed by current practice and scholarship such as antiracist pedagogy, translanguaging, and translingualism

  • A deep understanding of multilingual learners and their experiences with a preference for those who have firsthand experiences with learning and using multiple languages
