Faculty in Design and Digital Culture

The University of Michigan Digital Studies Institute (DSI) and the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning invite applications for a joint (50/50) assistant professor tenure-track appointment. We are looking for colleagues conducting leading-edge creative practice and research in design and digital culture in relation to urban technology, encompassing topics such as computation and data, artificial intelligence and machine learning, gaming, or mixed reality and other emerging media. Focus areas might include:

• Urban tech and data-driven urbanization
• Diversity and labor in digital industries and practices shaping buildings and cities
• The future of work in the age of artificial intelligence
• Digital space, place, power, and mobility 

We seek a faculty member with a generative and projective orientation who can teach design studios, elective courses, or other classes that activate the creative capacities in our students, grounded in critical reflection but also linked to design and making. This position will serve students enrolled in the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Digital Studies minors, and students across the College of Literature, Science and the Arts as well as the university at large.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should possess a graduate professional and/or doctoral degree in architecture, urban design, or a closely related field. They should also present a robust research/creative practice agenda along with a commitment in their work and teaching to the critical-cultural study of digital technology in relation to power, ideology, visibility, representation, and cultural difference.
