Assistant Professor of English in Fiction Writing

Valparaiso University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of English ( Valparaiso University (“Valpo”), a community of learning grounded in the Lutheran tradition of scholarship, freedom, and faith, prepares students to lead and serve both church and society. Located one hour southeast of Chicago on a 310-acre campus, Valpo is a comprehensive university with an enrollment of approximately 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Valpo is consistently recognized as one of the best private universities in the Midwest and is located in Valparaiso, Indiana, a county seat of 35,000 residents with high-quality schools and an active social community.

Applicants should have a specialization in fiction writing and a secondary expertise in poetry writing. Experience in other genres, including creative nonfiction, digital/interactive storytelling, or emerging forms and genres, is welcome. In addition to courses in the Creative Writing major, the successful candidate should also expect to teach general education classes, including the CORE humanities seminar for first-year students, professional writing, and/or writing for the health sciences. The position is tenure track to begin August 2023.  A Ph.D. or M.F.A. in Creative Writing or a closely related field should be completed by the start of the position.

The teaching load is normally three or four courses per semester and includes introductory, upper-division, and graduate courses. Traditional service functions, such as advising and committee work, are expected. The successful candidate will have opportunities to work with our Wordfest writers series, The Lighter undergraduate literary magazine, and/or the journals Valparaiso Poetry Review and Valparaiso Fiction Review. Publications are necessary for advancement.
