FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of World Languages and Literatures at the College of Staten Island of The City University of New York invites applications for a full-time lecturer in Spanish position beginning in August 2023. The successful candidate will be a career educator who will coordinate the Spanish language program, supervise student-teacher candidates working on NY teaching certification, be a liaison with the School of Education, teach all levels of Spanish language, develop Spanish-language and culture curriculum, and take a leading role in recruitment, advisement, program development, the Spanish Program’s extracurricular events and community building. Candidates should demonstrate native/near-native fluency in English and Spanish, competence in computer-assisted instruction and foreign language pedagogy. Desired areas of expertise include Spanish for Heritage Speakers, Second Language Acquisition, and Applied Linguistics. 

Full-time lecturers are expected to perform the following duties:

-Fulfill teaching and administrative duties equivalent to 24 hours per academic year (usually three courses per semester)

-Coordinate the Spanish language program

-Serve as a liaison with the School of Education

-Supervise student-teachers

-Teach Spanish language and Second Language Acquisition classes

-Serve on relevant departmental and college-wide committees

-Participate in faculty development opportunities

-Advise students

-Perform teaching and related faculty functions in area(s) of expertise.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.

Preferred qualifications:

A Master's degree in Spanish with a minimum of five years of teaching/coordinating experience at the college level; preference is given to candidates with a Ph.D. in Spanish Second Language Acquisition and/or Pedagogy.  Experience working with heritage speakers of Spanish is highly desirable, experience coordinating and developing multi-section language courses, and practical experience with the NY State teacher certification process.  

COMPENSATION

$62,133 - $72,280
