Full-Time Faculty Position in Literature/Literary Translation at Bennington College

Bennington College

Job Type: Full Time

Location: Bennington, Vermont, United States

Bennington College invites applications for a full-time faculty position in literature, with a focus on Translation and Translation Theory. This position will begin in the fall of 2023, and the successful candidate will teach courses in translation and translation theory as well as creative writing and comparative and global literature. Applicants should be active literary translators with at least one book publication in literary translation into English and dedicated to student-centered teaching.

Through Bennington's teacher-practitioner model, individual members of the faculty shape the future curriculum, and professional work is in ongoing dialogue with faculty's teaching and advising. Candidates should expect to teach the equivalent of five literature courses a year, including courses in translation, but ideally also extending to wide-ranging coursework in creative writing and literature of various historical periods. In particular, we seek to expand our current offerings in areas such as any one of the following: Caribbean literature, African literature, Asian and Asian American literature including South Asian literature, the literature of the Middle East, Latine literature in the United States, and/or 19th century and 20th century African American literature.

Bennington College is a small residential liberal arts college in southern Vermont, long distinguished for its progressive approach to higher education. The College was founded in 1932 on the principle of active engagement in learning, which is manifest in individualized plans of study developed by students together with faculty.

Bennington serves a diverse student population inclusive of members of ethnically/racially minoritized, international, LGBTQIA+, and disability communities as well as diverse gender identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, and political beliefs. Our staff and faculty also reflect diverse and intersecting backgrounds and identities. All employees are expected to be respectful and responsive to these differences in the service of building a community that promotes student and employee success. Each individual (faculty, staff and student) will be accountable for upholding these values. The College's approach to pluralism and inclusivity—both as fields of inquiry and practice—is to prioritize flexible thought, and to invite the examination of access, value, power, and privilege through its institutional policies and areas of study. We encourage applicants from diverse realms of interest, backgrounds, experience, and accomplishments to apply.

Candidates should apply online by submitting: a) letter of application that describes teaching experience, professional work and includes a reflection on the candidate's potential to contribute to a diverse and inclusive environment through teaching, research, and/or service; b) curriculum vitae; c) a 25-page sample of translated work; d) descriptions of at least 3 courses in literature that you would be interested in offering; and e) the names and contact information for three references.

In recognition of the employment challenges sometimes faced by academic couples in small communities, the College will also consider applications to share equally a single full-time faculty position. Applicants must each submit an individual application and indicate in their cover letters that they are applying jointly.

Review of applications will begin on December 30th, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. This position requires the successful completion and acceptable results of a background check.
