Assistant Professor of African American Literature

Position Details: Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of English specializing in African American Literature to begin September 1, 2023.

Institution Information: Randolph-Macon College, founded in 1830, is a selective, primarily residential liberal arts college with an enrollment of 1500 students located in the northern suburbs of Richmond, Virginia. It is 90 miles south of Washington, DC and 15 miles north of Richmond. The English department caters to a wide variety of students; from those with a lifelong love of language and reading, to those who write poetry and fiction, and beyond to those eager to understand how language may be used to entertain, move, or persuade. The department values faculty with dynamic teaching styles and active research programs, and is committed to offering our students a curriculum that reflects the diversity of the human experience.

Major/Essential Functions: Randolph-Macon College faculty teach, advise, conduct research and engage in scholarship, and serve the college and department. Primary teaching responsibilities include upper-division courses in the candidate’s area of specialization, general education courses in literature, and first-year composition, with opportunities to teach in the Honors Program and other relevant interdisciplinary programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in English with a specialty in African American Literature (in hand by August 1, 2023)
  • Experience in undergraduate teaching
  • Evidence of an ongoing research program
  • Clear evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in the teaching of undergraduates;
  • Evidence of scholarly publication and/or presentation in the candidate’s specialty;
  • Evidence of teaching and/or scholarship that engages with any of the following: critical race theory, postcolonial and/or diaspora studies, multiethnic literature, or related fields;
  • Ability to contribute to relevant interdisciplinary programs;
  • Experience in practicing pedagogy, developing policies, and/or participating in programs that enhance equitable opportunities for students, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds.

  • The names and contact information for three professional references (at least one must be able to address teaching experience and teaching effectiveness; please indicate the teaching reference in your letter of application).
