Assistant Professor of English

The Department of English at Utica University is seeking to hire faculty with expertise in one of two areas: World Literature or British Literature

World Literature (i.e. not U.S. or British Literature) in translation before 1650 with ability to teach a broad survey of World Literature and courses on individual periods and topics of expertise. Teaching load includes LIT 205 (World Literature to 1650; required for the major), and upper level electives likely to include LIT 334 (Greek and Roman Mythology), LIT 356 (From Fairy Tale to Modern Fantasy), LIT 400 (Topics in World Literature).

OR

British Literature since 18th century with ability to teach a broad survey of British Literature and courses on individual periods of expertise as well as topics in British Literature. Teaching load includes ENG 246 (Major Figures in English Literature: Since the 18th Century) and ENG 305 (Topics in British Literature) as well as ENG 355 (Literature of the Romantic Period), ENG 356 (Literature of the Victorian Period), and/or ENG 357 (Modern British Literature).

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. by August 2023

For either position, the successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to contribute to the department’s teaching in general education courses including first-year composition and literature courses. A willingness to participate in service to the department and institution and an ongoing research agenda are also expected. Additional interest in one or more of the following areas is desirable: children’s literature, young adult literature, queer literature, and/or creative nonfiction.
