FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Department of English at York College, a senior 4-year college of the City University of New York, invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor specializing in Global Writing, with a primary specialization in Anglopbone Caribbean Literature, Language, & Culture, beginning Fall 2023. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to a scholarly program and excellence in teaching within a diverse, urban public university setting.
The successful candidate will teach courses in Global Writing. Within the Global Writing area of the major, students may currently choose courses including Caribbean Literatures in English, Global Women Writers, World Englishes, and Writing of Diasporas. We welcome a colleague who will expand these offerings.
In addition to Global Writing courses in the major, full time department faculty also teach first-year composition, junior-level writing courses, and other general education courses. The teaching load is 18 hours per academic year. For tenure, in addition to excellent teaching, a consistent record of research and publication as well as service to the department, College, and university are expected. The English department includes majors in English and Journalism, as well as housing the college-wide Writing Program, including first year composition, junior-level writing, and writing across the curriculum.
York College, founded in 1966, is a center of academic excellence in the heart of Jamaica, Queens. QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Required:
- Ph.D and primary research program in Anglophone literature outside the U.S. and British Isles, especially in the Caribbean
- Doctorate must be in hand by August 15, 2023.
- At least two years teaching experience at the College level.
Preferred:
Candidates with secondary expertise / ability to teach courses in literatures of other Anglophone / post-colonial Englishes outside of the U.S. and British Isles e.g. Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific, including diasporas. Scholarship related to transnational, translingual and global issues also preferred.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.
After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.
If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.
Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
The salary range for this appointment is $52,267 - $99,532
