Who is Saint Louis University? Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic universities. SLU, which also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, is recognized for world-class academics, life-changing research, compassionate health care, and a strong commitment to faith and service.
Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care, and service, seeks an energetic scholar for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor position in Spanish, in the Department of Languages, Literature, and Cultures with a specialization in:
- Spanish Linguistics and/or Second Language Acquisition, or Applied Linguistics with emphasis in Spanish
The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. by the time of the appointment, native or near-native command of Spanish and English, and an ability to teach Spanish language and linguistics at all levels. Candidates should demonstrate successful teaching experience at the university level and show initial scholarly development in the area of Applied Linguistics, with a preference for second language acquisition and language pedagogy. Highly desirable qualifications include: previous K-12 licensure and/or experience with supervision of candidates for teacher’s certification in the field experiences and practicum stages. Engagement with community-based research, issues of social justice, and/or service-learning as part of the course curriculum will be highly valued. Responsibilities include research, teaching, and service. The candidate will be expected to contribute to curriculum development and program building, and to fulfill service responsibilities that both maintain and enhance the profile of the Spanish program, including advising undergraduate majors and minors, as well as graduate students. Finally, we seek an energetic scholar with interest to teach at a Catholic Jesuit University and to engage with the Jesuit mission of educating students to better serve a diverse community.
The teaching load will be 2/2. Courses may include all levels of undergraduate language and linguistics courses, as well as graduate courses in the area of specialty. This position expects significant participation in our newly formed Master’s in Spanish Education program, which will include a two-course graduate-level language pedagogy sequence each year. Experience building inclusive, multidisciplinary learning environments for students is very desirable. Interested applicants who have overcome personal barriers (e.g. low income, first generation college student, minority) are encouraged to apply.
